Next Creative Mix Media Art Project for N1 to P1

There was this legend of a beautiful woman Chang’e who flew to the moon and a jade rabbit was sent to the moon.....if you are lucky, you may spot the shadow of the rabbit on the moon every 15th day of 8th lunar month!

This is the famous folktale known to many of us as the origin of Mid-Autumn Festival, a traditional festival celebrated by the Chinese culture. In this festival, children will have fun with lanterns under the moonlight! And of course, not forgetting the mooncakes! From the traditional salted egg lotus paste to novelty rose lychee snow skin, mooncakes nowadays come in yummy flavour with interesting designs.

What's your favourite mooncake? And how do you celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival with your family? Let's immerse in this festival with our little artists!

Learning Points 学习目标:

  • Building Creativity and Imagination through learning about the Mexican Alebrijies.

  • Constructing in 3D - Leaning to translate 2D drawings to 3D forms.

  • Material Exploration - Learning to work with materials like wires and paper mache to build 3D forms.

  • Decorative Skills - Learning Mexican textile patterns (spirals, crosses, moons, indigenous symbols, geometric patterns, letters, animals, and zig-zags etc.) to decorate Alebrijies.

  • Storytelling and Curation Skills - Learning to document processes in sketchbook and putting together a process portfolio for final showcase sharing session.

The story behind these whimsical and colorful creatures is quite extraordinary. If you have watched Disney-Pixar fantasy film, Coco, you’ll know that these are Alebrijes, papier-mâché creations that have become a staple of Mexican folk art. But how did these beautiful monsters come to be? That’s all thanks to one man with a dream - Pedro Linares! In 1936, Pedro, a craftsman in Mexico City, fell ill with a high fever and dreamed he was in a strange land filled with bizarre yet vibrantly-coloured creatures shouting the word “Alebrije!” Upon recovery, Pedro began recreating the creatures using papier-mâché. Eventually, his work made its way into galleries and caught the attention of artists like Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, who commissioned him to create even more. Today, the Linares family continues to create Alebrijes that are prized by collectors all over the world. Our junior artists drew from their favourite animals or creatures and started to use wires, papier-mâché and clay to build their very own Alebrijes! You will not find any two that are alike, and they are each different with their vibrant colours, and details throughout such as patterns, stripes, shapes, facial expressions and more.
