Artistori is celebrating an achievement! Our little artists took part in the 53rd World School Children's Art Exhibition 2022 and they have done so well. They have worked hard and distinguished themselves from the 60,000 entries from children all over the world. There are 20 winners from Singapore, out of which 6 came from Artistori.

We are proud of them and want to share their victories with you:

About The Competition

What is the Taiwan Children's Picture Contest?

In an endeavor to promote international cultural exchange and spur the development of fine arts education for children, the Association for Education Through Art of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the National Taiwan Arts Education Centre have been jointly organizing the World School Children’s Art Exhibition since 1966.

This year saw 60,000 entries from children from around the world, out of which 40 were selected from Singapore to be exhibited for the World School Children's Art Exhibition to mark Children's Day. The Exhibition has, over its half-century history, attracted the participation and support of people worldwide.

The Award Ceremony

Our Little Artists were invited to a prize-giving ceremony to give recognition to their achievements and celebrate them. Our Little Artists had worked hard for this day, and they were glad that their efforts had been rewarded by being selected as some of the best from around the world.

The prize-winning works were awarded certificates, medals, and other prizes. The Little Artists were also given opportunities to meet one another as well as representatives from Taiwan.

We are proud to announce our 5 winners from Artistori: A big congratulations to Karissa, Jefferson, Min Shuen, Ezann, Valeria, and Idris.

Let's Celebrate Our Winners

We wanted to celebrate their achievements by diving deep with an interview with our Little Artists, to hear more about their artwork, creative process, the inspiration behind their work, and to get some nuggets of wisdom.

Jefferson: 踢足球

First up, say hello to Jefferson, aged 5+!

Could you tell us more about the inspiration behind the artwork?

During the weekends, I like playing football for fun. My family always brings me to the beach to play. In this picture, I drew myself, daddy, mummy, Ryan, and Reily playing football at the beach.

How do you feel about being awarded for this competition?

I feel very happy as though I am eating a lot of sweets because I got the award!

Any words of advice for Young Artists?

Never give up and always do your best. Don’t stop drawing even if you didn’t get any awards, just try again and again.

Did you face any challenges in the creation process?

No. I enjoy creating art. I draw what I want to draw and what I experience in my daily life. I had a lot of fun drawing this.

Karissa: A Rollercoaster Ride

Say hello to Karisa, aged 11, a Creative Fine Arts student from Artistori.

Could you tell us more about the inspiration behind the artwork?

The painting depicts the day I overcame my fear of rollercoasters. It was an unforgettable experience for me and my cousins and friends. We were screaming at the top of our lungs and the people on the ground were watching us.

How do you feel about being awarded for this competition?

I feel good and proud of myself. Although I am happy to win, I felt very nervous to go on stage to receive the award. Nonetheless, I am grateful to win and want to thank Teacher Charlotte for giving me guidance for the artwork's composition and color.

Any words of advice for Young Artists?

Draw your heart out. Don't hold back, draw whatever your heart tells you to draw. Also, have confidence in your capabilities. You will be surprised at what you can achieve when you just do your best.

Min Shuen: A Cycling Trip to Coney Island 騎腳車

Next, we have Min Sheun, aged 9, also a Creative Fine Arts Student at Artistori.

Could you tell us more about the inspiration behind the artwork?

My artwork is about a day spent at Coney Island with my parents and my little sister. It was a peaceful, quiet, and relaxing day and I wanted to capture the moment forever.

The cycling path was rocky but that added to the fun, you can see the rocks pathways I captured in the drawing. My parents were riding their bikes next to my little sister and me. We were all together enjoying our time together at Coney Island!

Did you face any challenges in the creation process?

I struggled with recreating the textures of nature - the trees and the stones in particular. Coney Island has pine trees and it was my first time drawing them. Teacher Charlotte showed me how to recreate the textures using colored pencils and soft pastels.

How do you feel about being awarded for this competition?

I was shocked, I didn't expect to win. Winning inspired me to work harder in my art journey and motivated me to want to join more art competitions.

Any words of advice for Young Artists?

Never give up, everything seems impossible until it's done. This was my first project coming into Artistori and I never expected myself to win. So have confidence, you can do it!

Even if you fail, don't be afraid to try again. Failure is the mother of success.

Idris: Feeding the Penguins 餵企鵝

Say hello to Idris, aged 11 from our Creative Fine Arts.

Could you tell us more about the inspiration behind the artwork?

It was an enjoyable day at the bird park where I got to get up close and personal with my favorite animals, penguins! It was feeding time and on this rare occasion, they let the penguins out of their enclosure and allowed the public to feed them.

Like penguins, I also enjoy being in cold environments because I have eczema. I relate to their love to be in the cold.

How do you feel about being awarded for this competition?

I had mixed emotions. I was surprised and happy - surprised because I did not expect to win the award and happy because I was proud of myself. I saw so many nice artworks being submitted and I honestly did not expect myself to win.

Any words of advice for Young Artists?

Trust your art mentors, they can help elevate your artwork. For my artwork, my teacher advised me to use contrasting colors for the water. I did not think it would look nice but I went ahead and trusted her. I love the end result, the contrasting colors look great together.

Art is a way to express yourself and be creative. It can be a tool to explain your feelings. I hope that other young artists don't let fear stop them from drawing.

If your drawing looks weird, you can always erase and edit things. Don't let fear stop you from picking up the pencil.

Ezann: A Rainbow Fish 水族館

From our Creative Mixed Media department, we have Ezann, aged 8.

Could you tell us more about the inspiration behind the artwork?

My artwork, titled Rainbow Fish shows a day I spent with my family at the aquarium. We were surrounded by a lot of colorful fishes swimming all around us.

Rainbows, fishes and my family makes me happy and Teacher Shan gave me the idea to work on this artwork, to combine all the things that made me happy.

How do you feel about being awarded for this competition?

I was nervous to go up on stage to get the award but my mum encouraged me.

Any words of advice for Young Artists?

When you draw, you must be relaxed and free. There is no right or wrong when it comes to art. I love to challenge myself with art and draw things that are new to me. Art gives me that space to challenge myself and overcome my fears.

Thank you to our Little Artists for sharing their thoughts and creativity with us. We are so proud of how far you have come and what you have accomplished. We can't wait to see what else you will do.

Creative Visual Arts programme for Primary 5 and above.

As students develop portfolios for their visual arts works, it is very important for them to reflect on their learning journey and to emphasize on how to express their feelings, thoughts, ideas and their reflections through many different forms of presentations.

For this digital project, it is 10-week crash course on fundamental skills to create an ice cream loop animation using Blender 3D software: www.blender.org

I received much positive feedback from the students despite how challenging their learning journey was. Most of them agreed that learning digital 3D modelling is a skillset that benefits their academic future. They are all very satisfied with their animations and wanted to have their loop animation set to their phone wallpaper. Listen to their presentations to understand what they found out about the landscape of digital 3D today.

Ther individual presentations are under the Creative Visual Art playlist on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjxU6qSuQ7Vdm5w9jhTRt8kfhlednhr2q
