It's a wrap! After 7 weeks, our Junior Artists are done with their Manga Anime Drawing.

Manga is the defining comic book style of Japan, and it's easy to see why. Its characters are all big-eyed, expressive creatures with elaborate costumes and big hair. It's all about storytelling.

For the past 7 weeks, our Junior artists have been learning everything from how to draw manga characters' faces and bodies, to how to create your own unique outfits and costumes. They studied body shapes, facial expressions, compositions, and color palettes and learned the skills needed to bring their dream manga character to life.

Come journey with us, here's an overview of our process:

Week 1: Designing our Manga Character

In week 1, our Junior artists were introduced to the world of manga, they learned about the difference between Japanese Manga and American comic books and were introduced to the various types of manga styles.

The Junior Artists were then tasked with designing their own characters. Through a mindmap, they were asked to think about their character’s likes, dislikes, personality traits, and more. From there, they came up with their very own unique character. After developing and sharing their character with the teacher and their classmates, our Junior Artists then proceeded to do an initial sketch of their characters.

Week 2: Time for Manga Eyes and some Storyboarding

We started the Second Class with everyone’s favorite manga eyes. Manga character’s eyes are one of, if not the hardest part of the face to master. Eyes are where most of someone’s emotion is expressed and when drawn well, an artist can create several layers of depth for a character. After some practice, our Junior Artists got the hang of manga eyes - check out their work!

With the character mindmap that they developed, our Junior Artists then proceeded to map out their storyboards. A storyboard is a series of panels in which sketches are arranged to tell a story. They used their mindmaps as reference points for their storyboards so that they could make sure that everything would be clear and consistent.

Week 3 and 4: Finalizing our Storyboards and Inking

The Junior Artists were finally finished with their storyboards and it was time to move on and transfer their work to their final A3 paper.

Before getting started, they used masking tape to map out their panels to ensure clean lines for the finished work. They then began the task of transferring their work and after, they began the inking process. Drawing in pen and ink is like walking a tightrope. Each step needs to be a mindful one. Once a line is on the paper, there’s no going back. Our Junior Artists had to be mindful and stay concentrated throughout this process.

Week 5: Getting our Hands Dirty with Acrylic Ink

It's time to get colorful. For this project, our Junior Artists were introduced to acrylic ink. Acrylic Inks are essentially an extremely fluid version of acrylic paint. A Brightly colored, highly expressive, lightfast, and very flowy.

At Artistori, we make it a point for our students to try a wide range of mediums and techniques. After already dabbling with acrylic paint for our previous project, we wanted to try something new.

Our Junior Artists chose a color palette that ensures cohesiveness and continuity in the final outcome. After this process, they began painting!

Week 6: Another week to play with colors

Our Junior Artists continue the painting process this week, and they worked hard to ensure that they stuck with their chosen color palette and maintained cohesiveness in their work.

Week 7: It's Showcase Week!

It's a wrap! At the end of each project, our Junior Artists participate in showcase week where they do a short sharing on their artistic journey - they share about their challenges, and joy and learn to talk about their journey. This is a great way for our students to reflect on their work and how they feel about it.

We are so proud of all of our students for their hard work throughout the year. We hope you enjoyed being part of their journey as much as we do. Catch some of our students sharing in the video below:

As the world of higher education continues to change, students are now more likely than ever to attend university. With this in mind, it’s important to make sure that your child is prepared for this new stage of their life. If you are looking for ways to help your child get ready for university, consider enrolling them in an art school.

Art school can be very good preparation for university or college. Why? The subjects and lessons taught at art school are not only useful in professional life but also in everyday life. Art schools not only provide students with a great education but also teach them valuable skills such as problem-solving and critical thinking, which will be invaluable when they start their careers as well as throughout their lives.

Here are 3 reasons how art school can prepare and give your child the skills needed in university:

Developing the Ability to Discuss at a Higher Level

Talking about art and things is a good way to teach children the importance of listening to others’ points of view. It also helps them learn how to express their opinions respectfully, which is a skill they will need throughout their lives.

Children are naturally curious and are often passionate about what they want to talk about. By creating conversation surrounding art, you can help children develop the ability to listen carefully, think critically, and express what they know in an organized manner.

Letting them take on these tasks will help build their analytical skills and prepare them for when they enter university or find themselves in a job where they must solve problems on a daily basis.

Developing the Ability to Analyse

Art school teaches students how to look at something from different angles and view it from different perspectives.

The ability to analyse is a key skill for an artist, as it allows them to understand what they are seeing and how it relates to other things within their field.

What was the purpose behind this piece? What were they trying to achieve with it? What do they like about it? Why do they think it looks good or bad? How can I make mine better than theirs? Art school trains your child to build these critical thinking skills and develop their ability to analyze things from various viewpoints.

Letting your child take on these tasks will help build their analytical skills and prepare them for when they enter university or find themselves in a job where they must solve problems on a daily basis.

Becoming more Eloquent and Articulate

Art is a great tool for developing self-expression and confidence in young children. It also helps them to develop their vocabulary, which is a vital skill for all children to have.

By talking about art with your child, you'll help them become more confident in expressing themselves. They'll pick up new words about art and gain fluency in expressing themselves more articulately.

An increase in word power enables children to translate everything around them into words quickly and easily. It also gives them the ability to talk about their emotions and feelings. When children are able to express themselves freely through language, they build confidence and self-esteem. This can help them develop a better understanding of their place in society as well as what they want out of life.

Being able to speak clearly and eloquently is one of the most important skills a person can have. It's not just an advantage in school but also in the workplace.

Kickstart your Children’s Journey in Art With Artistori

The benefits of art cannot last a lifetime, but what it does do is help an individual develop their artistic and cognitive ability in the present. By getting an early start on arts education and developing their creativity, children can develop meta-cognitive habits that support their learning in academic subjects.

At Artistori, we recognize the importance of developing a child’s creativity and individuality through the Arts. We believe that every child has an incredible artistic ability, regardless of their background or where they come from. At Artistori, we build a positive environment for our students to experience art in a safe space, where they can explore their own creativity and come up with extraordinary works.
